Deployment
Manual Installation
Initial manual installs of the client can be achieved by visiting the distribution point (HSCN required). This allows the user to download the current version of the MSI installation package which they can execute themselves.
Automated Rollout
The xyClient is designed to be end-user installable but we recognise that this is not always possible/desirable.
Process
If you want to automate rollout you should download the latest version of the MSI and use this with your deployment system to install on target computers.
As the installer is per-user this needs to be user targeted.
Please do not install to all machines and instead target to users who need the software. The client makes integration calls to multiple backend systems and widespread installation is wasteful and may result in technical issues due to rate filtering.
Self Updates & Refresh
The xyClient is updated regularly and so if you choose to take a copy of the MSI and use it for automated rollout then two things are necessary;
- After your deployment the client must be able to update. To test this load the client, navigate through the systray icon to Info and click “Check for Updates”. The update window should occur and no errors should be presented. The download site (link above) allows the download of previous versions of the MSI which allows you to test with a previous version and ensure your deployed copy is able to update.
- It will be necessary to periodically refresh the MSI that you use for rollouts. If you do not do this then fresh installs will be out of date. This will have two side affects;
- Short term - the client will need to update before being used, this will use deltas.
- Medium term - the client will need to update before being used but will need to use a full download which will be slower and consume more bandwidth.
- Longer term - the client will hit the outer end of its update window and cease to be useable OR updatable.
We publish notifications of new versions - you can sign up to our mailing list to receive these.
